Marital Status

Marital status is a basic socio-demographic characteristic of people, which covers biological, social, economic, legal and, in many cases, religious aspects. The composition of  the population according  to this variable is the result of three vital events. The first is the relatively Permanente union of two people of opposed sex with the purpose of forming a family. When the union has a legal nature, it is called marriage of matrimony, and when it is a de facto union it is referred to as a marital union. It should be noted that in Mozambique, the marital union involves an agreement between the families of the two partners; in this sense, it cannot be regarded as a simple consensual union, but as a traditional marriage. The second event is the dissolution of the union by the decision of one or both of the partners. When the dissolution is by law it is called divorce, and when it is de facto, it is called separation. The third event is the death of one of the partners. The surviving partner is the widow or widower. These events permanently change the distribution of people by their marital status.

Table 5.1 presents the percentage distribution of the population aged 12 and above in Mozambique, by sex, and by area of residence and marital status. The data in this table are self-explanatory. However, it is worth mentioning that marital union is more frequent in rural than in urban areas. Thus in the former, the respective percentage is 47.0% against 35.8% in the second (a difference of 31.3%).

Another important variable in analysing marital status is the average age at the first marriage. In most societies, women marry younger than men. According to the data from the IIRGPH, this is also the case of Mozambique: the average age of women at marriage is 20.3 years and that of men is 24.9 years. In the urban sector, these figures are rather higher than those in the rural areas: 22.3 years for women and 27.2 years for men against 19.3 and 23.7 years, respectively.
