Welcome to the Gateway of the National Statistics Institute

As you, the users of official statistical information, certainly know, today the determinant role of statistics is widely recognised as an essential tool for managing a modern and democratic state. Indeed, statistical information makes an unequivocal contribution to economic and social development, and at the same time to strengthening the rights and freedoms of citizens – that is, to the strengthening of citizenship. In the context of globalisation, the importance of statistical information as a facilitator and promoter of globalisation, of interchange and of knowledge between peoples and nations, which are fundamental aspects of development and modernisation, is still greater.

The National Statistics Instituto (INE) the central executive body of the Nacional Statistics System (SEN) whose basic mission is to produce and publicise the country’s official statistical information, is an institution in public law, with technical, administrative and financial autonomy, which was set up on 28 August 1996, under the reform of the SEN begun with the approval of the Framework Law on the SEN passed by the Assembly of the Republic on 5 June that year.

It is thus with this sublime task in mind, and with the basic characteristics of official statistical information, namely rigour, timeliness, objectivity, impartiality and transparency, that the INE is establishing this further link via the INTERNET between itself and the national and foreign users of the SEN. As from now, and by this means, it is possible to obtain information in real time about the SEN, the INE, statistical publications edited, methodologies used, etc, and also, through the statistical information that the site presents, to learn something of the economic and social reality of the country.

When compared with the previous website, the current INE gateway has, in short, the following advantages and facilities:

• Easier and more flexible surfing, thanks to the way in which it is structured;
• It has incorporated an advanced search engine which makes it possible to research content by title, author, or key words;  
•  It has also incorporated software that allows the users to consult our production data bases directly, giving the possibility of producing their own statistical tables and graphs;
•  It includes tools that allow easy updating of contents by all collaborators of the institution, thus giving the gateway a greater dynamic.
  

Within the dynamic and life that we wish to impress on this gateway, the content and its presentation will be permanently improved so that we increasingly meet the wishes of the users. We thus urge our users to send their comments and suggestions to the addresses listed under “contact us”. We would be very grateful for this feedback.

Do not be limited to what the Gateway offers. The INE has statistical publications available in printed form and on magnetic support with more detailed information. These publications can be acquired at the INE’s headquarters and provincial offices, at the Bank of Mozambique, and at the Public Information Office, among other places.

In this short presentation of the INE gateway, we are deliberately not providing more information on its content and structure, in the hope that curiosity will drive you to seek to get to know it in a personalized way.
