Brief comments on the Consumer Price Index Beira City, April 2006

In April 2006, Beira city recorded a fall in prices of about 1.13%. The goods that had the greatest weight in this trend were foodstuffs and non-alcoholic drinks. Their prices fell by 1.86%, and contributed to the total monthly inflation with minus 1.08 percentage points.

 

The fall in the price of onions (25.5%), of maize flour (8.2%), of maize grain (33.8%), of cabbage (10.2%), of coconuts (5.8%) of kerosene (4.9%) and of cowpeas (28.6%) influenced significantly the recorded trend, by contributing to the total monthly inflation with minus 1.72 percentage points.

 

From January to April this year there was a general increase in prices of about 2.45%. Foodstuffs and non-alcoholic drinks contributed to the total accumulated inflation with 1.40 percentage points.

 

The data from April 2006, when compared with those from the same period in 2005 indicate an increase in prices of about 12.69%. The prices of foodstuffs and non-alcoholic drinks rose by about 15.88%.
