Agricultural and Livestock Census

The Agricultural and Livestock Census - CAP, The Agricultural and Livestock Census – CAP - is a major statistical operation, collecting relevant structural data on agricultural and livestock production in the country. The CAP 1999 -2000 was the first census of its kind held after Mozambican independence. Previous surveys, with the characteristics of a census, were held between1961 and 1971. As can be seen, for more than 30 years this kind of work had not been undertaken.

To provide a basis of information for drawing up policies in the agricultural sector, it was indispensable to undertake this census. The participation of all agricultural and livestock producers, government bodies, the public, development institutions, and others interested in this type of activity is of great importance for the national interest.

What are the objectives?
Mozambique is essentially an agricultural country. More than 75% of its population live in the countryside, and work in agriculture. It was thus of vital importance to understand the reality of this area, in order to facilitate the drafting of policies, programmes and plans that lead to the development of this activity.

Specifically, through the CAP, it was intended to ascertain the number of agricultural and livestock units, their spatial distribution, the production and productivity of the main crops and animal species, the use of land, the possession and use of means of production, and the sale of produce, among other aspects

.

The Agricultural and Livestock Census 1999 - 2000 was undertaken throughout the country, in all provinces and in all districts. In each District a particular number of Primary Sampling Units (villages or neighbourhoods) was chosen, where the data was gathered from small, medium and large farms.

Who will use the results of CAP 1999-2000?
After the data from CAP 1999-2000 is gathered and processed, it will be of inestimable value for:

  • State bodies, particularly MADER, MPF, INE  and other Ministries;
  • Researchers;
  • Cooperation and development agencies;
  • NGO’s;
  • Business people;

The information gathered will also be an input for the International Statistical System.

When was it carried out?
The Agricultural and Livestock Census 1999-2000 was carried out as from September 2000, covering data from the 1999 - 2000 and 2000 – 2001 agricultural campaigns.

Who carried out the CAP?
The CAP 1999 - 2000  was undertaken by the National Statistics Institute, in close partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Also involved in the event were the Ministries of State Administration, and of Industry and Trade, the Eduardo Mondlane University, associations of agricultural and livestock producers, among other institutions.
