Comprehensive Framework
Depository Corporations Survey
Producing and disseminating comprehensive data emphasizing: (1) coverage of all depository corporations (banking institutions), (2) use of an appropriate analytical framework; and (3) development of classifications of external assets and liabilities, domestic credit by sector, and components of money (liquidity) and nonmonetary liabilities.  The Monetary Survey includes BM, 11 commercial banks, two credit unions, and one leasing company. The other financial institutions (e.g., investment firms, exchange houses, microfinance firms, group purchases management firms, corporate investment management firms (SGPS), venture capital firms, representative offices of credit institutions headquartered abroad) are not compiled in the Monetary Survey. The methodology for compiling the monetary survey follows the recommendations of the IMF’s International Financial Statistics.  Monthly  Monthly  2-3 months  1 month
Data Categories and Indicators
Broad Money and Credit Aggregates
Net external position, domestic credit, broad or narrow money

* Net foreign assets: Gross reserves less short-term foreign liabilities (also medium-term and long-term) of BM and credit institutions.

* Domestic credit: Sum of net credit to the government (credits and deposits of central government institutions and other institutions that depend on the general State budget, including autonomous decentralized institutions, local governments, the Social Security Institute (INSS) and Consignation Funds), plus credit to the economy (nonfinancial public enterprises, private firms, private individuals and other nonmonetary financial institutions).

* Other assets and liabilities, net.

* Money (M1): comprises currency in circulation plus demand deposits in domestic and foreign currency of private firms, private individuals, other nonmonetary financial institutions, and nonfinancial public enterprises.

* Quasi-money: comprises savings and time deposits in domestic and foreign currency, plus repurchase agreements held by private firms, private individuals, other nonmonetary financial institutions, and nonfinancial public enterprises.

Interest Rates
Short and long-term government security rates, policy variable rate  The interest rates that banks charge their customers were deregulated in June 1994, which means that each bank fixes its rates based on its business objectives and market conditions. The Bank of Mozambique (BM) compiles loan and deposit interest rates monthly, disaggregated into domestic and foreign currency and by maturity. The reference rate of the Interbank Money Market (MMI) is the Maputo Interbank Offered Rate (MAIBOR). All rates are published daily in the country’s largest newspaper (NotĂcias) and on the Bank’s website (http://www.bancomoc.mz/).  Monthly  Monthly  Dissemination as part of a high-frequency (e.g. monthly) publication  Daily and monthly, daily averages
Money or interbank market rates and a range of deposit and lending rates

* Rates on BM permanent facilities: In this segment, BM intervenes with 3 interest rates, namely, the Permanent Injection Facility Rate (FPC), the Last Hour Facility (FUH), and the Permanent Absorption Facility (FPA). The first two rates are overnight rates, and the FPC is indexed to the weighted average rate applicable to BT’s at 91 days plus 5 percentage points. The FUH is indexed to the FPC, with a spread of 1 pp. The FPA is a rate applied to operations involving the sale of liquidity to BM at the initiative of credit institutions, with the maturity for such transactions being no longer than the deposit period for required reserves (RO’s) (15 or 16 days). These rates constitute the ceiling (FPC) and floor (FPA) of the MMI intervention rates, and the FUH is the MMI’s most penalizing rate (last resort rate). These rates were instituted on August 21, 1998.

* Liquidity swap rates: In this segment of the MMI, there are operations and rates for 4 maturities, namely, 1 to 7 days, 8 to 15 days, 16 to 30 days, and over 30 days. The institutions involved in this segment (mainly banks) make independent decisions regarding the rates to apply based on the liquidity prevailing in the market.
