NEW LOOK FOR THE NATIONAL STATISTICAL YEARBOOK

The 2003 edition of the National Statistical Yearbook, a publication of the National Statistics Institute (INE), is now on sale. The main novelty in this issue is an updated structure, adapted to the reality of the country; both in terms of quality, and in terms of the amount of statistical information made available to the users.

Indeed, the 2003 edition of what is one of the main publications of the INE and of the National Statistical System (SEN), because it transmits statistical data that cover the two pillars of national development, the economic and the social, presents, for example, new themes and new indicators, which allow and facilitate a more diversified reading of the real situation in the country’s economic and social areas.

By way of example, the previous editions had a total of 7 chapters and 25 sub-chapters. The new Yearbook has 5 chapters and 23 sub-chapters. Apparently an insignificant difference. However, the most significant differences can be found in the current form of presentation of the publication and particularly in its content, since new themes and new indicators have been introduced, defined in order to respond to the countless requests dictated by the current conjuncture – both as regards the needs of public institutions, and for users in general.

As mentioned above, the Statistical Yearbook is one of the main statistical publications of the INE and the SEN. The yearbook has been published practically since the colonial regime, albeit with another name. For this reason, its methodology, structure and content, among other aspects, have undergone alterations over the years, taking into account the need to respond to the challenges and needs of each moment.

The changes introduced now in the National Statistical Yearbook fit exactly into this philosophy. With this objective, the INE promoted a series of meetings last year, which involved its Delegated Bodies, as well as other users of statistical data, with the aim of making a critical analysis of the publication, from the perspective of creating a product, use of which would necessarily have to respond to the current challenges in terms of statistical information.

The National Statistical Yearbook has chapters on: Territory and Climate, with sub-chapters on Geographical Location, Territory and Climate; Population and Social Indicators, with sub-chapters on Population, Education, Higher Education, Health, Culture, Justice, Workforce and Tourism; Production of Goods and Services, with sub-chapters on Agriculture, Fisheries, Mineral Resources, Manufacturing Industry, Electricity, Construction and Assembly, and Transport and Communications; External Economic Relations, with sub-chapters on Exchange Rates, Exports and Imports; and Finance, Prices, and Macro-Economic Aggregates, with sub-chapters on Monetary Situation, Public Finances, Prices and Macro-economic Aggregates.
